Join Dr. Maria Liston, Associate Professor, Chair, Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies, Wilfrid Laurier University for their lecture, "Written in Bone." Please register. Written in Bone: Reading Life, Health, and History in the Ancient Skeleton: What happens to our stories after we are gone? While history books rely on written words, bioarchaeologists look to a different kind of archive: the human skeleton. Join us to learn how modern archaeological science can coax remarkably intimate details from ancient remains. Far from just revealing a person's age or biological sex, bones record a lifetime of lived experiences, discover how microscopic wear patterns, healed fractures, and chemical signatures reveal what ancient peoples ate, the physical labors they endured, the diseases they fought, and even the violence they encountered. By zooming in on individual lives, bioarcheology demonstrates how skeletal remains reshape our understanding of the broader social, political, and economic environments of the ancient world.
