Reading Buddies with the Library's Youth Volunteer Group

The Youth Volunteer Group's Reading Buddies program is designed to help children build confidence and improve their reading skills in a supportive, one-on-one environment. Participants are paired with a teen volunteer reading buddy who provides encouragement, guidance, and positive reinforcement while reading together. Through shared reading activities, games, and conversation, children strengthen their literacy skills, develop a love of reading, and gain confidence in their abilities. For children in grades one to six. Registration is required. Program goals Encourage a lifelong love of reading. Build reading confidence and fluency. Improve comprehension and literacy skills. Create positive mentoring relationships. Provide a fun, supportive, and engaging learning environment. Program format Participants meet weekly with their reading buddy for approximately 30 minutes to read books, discuss stories, and participate in literacy-based activities. Teens interested in joining the Youth Volunteer Group can sign up on the Library's Volunteer page. By participating in this program, you acknowledge that you accept and agree to Guelph Public Library's Code of Conduct. Alternative formats are available as per the Accessibility per Ontarians Act by contacting Library Communications at 519-824-6220. Accessible programs and events Sensory kits are available by request at all library programs. Please let us know a few days before a program if you need any accessibility accommodations so we can plan for you. For sign language interpreters we ask for a minimum of two weeks' notice. When registering for a program with a support person, please include them as an additional guest.
